The Graduate Certificate in Emotion Focused Therapy is a prises postgraduate program that involves experienced and qualified professionals from various fields such as counselling, social work, psychotherapy, psychology, health, and human services. These courses focus on teaching the Emotion Focused approach to counselling individuals and couples with a wide range of issues.

Course Details

The course is offered over 3 trimesters. Each Trimester is 14 weeks long.

• Live lectures
• Demonstration of techniques

• Case Study discussions
• Practice sessions, activities and case formulations

Group Supervision

• 30 hours online group supervision with EFT clinical supervisor 
• Couse formulation 
• Video presentation of client session (with consent)

Accreditation

• TEQSA, the Australian Tertiary Education Qualification and Standards Agency https://www.teqsa.gov.au/
• FEE HELP approved.

Study Options

Our courses are delivered in a fully online format, combining synchronous classes and asynchronous learning materials. Synchronous learning involves the instructor and learners being present together, either virtually or in-person, at the same scheduled time. At IEFT, each unit includes a weekly 2-3 hour synchronous live session throughout the trimester. Additionally, we provide asynchronous materials that students can access at any time, 24/7, throughout the trimester. These materials consist of video recordings, readings, and presentations.

The live sessions are scheduled in the evenings, following the Sydney, NSW time zone. Each session has a duration of 2-3 hours. Typically, there are 1-2 live sessions per week during each trimester.

Intakes

Beginning April 2023 IEFT will be trialling a trimester model for newly commencing students.

• Trimester 1 Start date 22 January 2024

Assessments

Students will complete both practical and theoretical assessment tasks. The practical tasks are designed to provide opportunities for students to practice and self-evaluate their EFT skills.

All Courses offered at IEFT are supported by the Australian Government’s FEE HELP program (for eligible students).

Enrolment requirements:

• A qualification from Vocational Education and Training at AQF level 5 OR
• A Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in a relevant field at AQF Level 6
• Membership or eligibility for membership to a professional association relevant to the qualification and at least 12 months of working in a role that requires the provision of counselling (paid or voluntary)
• National Police check

Graduate Certificate in Emotion Focused therapy course summary

The course focuses on assessing, exploring and intervening with emotional experience with individuals and couples. Students acquire a wide range of interventions for working with emotion at verbal and creative levels. Methods of working with emotional experience are presented and demonstrated in workshops. Methods of discovering, managing and working with emotional experience are outlined and demonstrated by academic teaching staff. Guidelines for counselling interventions using verbal and creative methods are provided in each subject.

Course learning outcomes

• Articulate the theoretical basis for the Emotion Focused model, encompassing its foundations in a range of counselling and psychotherapy modalities;
• Draw on a wide range of Emotion-Focused skills for assessing and intervening with individuals;
• Interview, assess and work with a broad range of individual client presentations, including relationship difficulties, loss and grief and mental health concerns;
• Refer to other appropriate practitioners and services, including medical, psychiatric, child protection and domestic violence, in the best interests of clients’ welfare;
• Competently apply theoretical knowledge of the Emotion Focused model in counselling practice with individuals;
• Analyse, assess, develop, execute and evaluate assessment and intervention in Emotion Focused Therapy;
• Work effectively with a broad range of client presentations by applying strategies to access inner experience and work collaboratively with their emotional aspects;
• Demonstrate reflective practice skills and consider the ethical contraindications for accessing emotional experience.
